Overview
It involves the expulsion of excess kapha and pitta doshas from the body through therapeutic emesis ( vomiting).
Before the actual procedure there is a preparatory phase called purvakarm. This includes internal oleation ( ingesting medicinal ghee or oil) and external oleation ( massage with medicated oil or ghee) to lubricate the body and loosen toxins.
Snehan ( Internal oleation) :- This involves consuming medicated ghee or oil for a few days to prepare the body for the elimination of toxins.
Benefits of Vaman
Vaman (वमन) is one of the five core therapies in Panchakarma, an ancient Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation process.

Detoxification
Removes toxins accumulated due to excess Kapha, thus cleansing the stomach and respiratory tract.

Improved Respiratory Health
Effective for respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, sinus congestion, and allergies by expelling excess mucus.

Enhanced Digestive Health
Balances Kapha in the digestive system, improving metabolism, appetite, and digestion.

Weight Management
Helps reduce body weight by eliminating excess Kapha, which is often associated with heaviness and sluggishness.

Skin Health
Treats skin issues related to Kapha imbalances, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

Boosting Immunity
By cleansing the body of toxins, Vaman may help boost the immune system, making it more efficient in fighting off infections.
Contraindications for Vaman
Vaman is not suitable for everyone and should be avoided in certain conditions:
Pregnancy: Vaman is generally contraindicated during pregnancy.
Severe weakness or emaciation: If the person is already weak or undernourished, Vaman may be too taxing.
Acute or chronic fever: It is not recommended during high fever or active infection.
Heart disease: People with severe heart conditions may not tolerate the vomiting process.
Severe dehydration: Since Vaman induces vomiting, it could lead to further dehydration, which could be dangerous for people with already low fluid levels.
Types of Vaman
- Classical Vamana: The standard Vamana procedure as described in Ayurvedic texts, done with preparatory steps like oleation and sweating before emesis.
- Modified or Gentle Vamana: For individuals with lower Kapha dosha or specific conditions, a gentler approach may be used with mild emetics or herbal decoctions to avoid intense vomiting.
- Karma Vamana: Vamana performed specifically for therapeutic purposes in severe Kapha-related diseases like asthma or chronic bronchitis, where the intensity is adjusted as per the patient’s condition.
- Pichhil Vamana: A type of Vamana where fewer emetic drugs are used to minimize discomfort while still achieving partial detoxification for those with weak digestion or lower Kapha accumulation.
